I’m syncing my KeePassXC db with Syncthing to about 6 devices, have been doing so for years. And a second db which we share at work.
Why do you need so much ram in your NAS?
SmartTube -> Settings -> About -> Enable global search (firmware support needed)
If you click that it will download a app which will function like a gate (it places it in instead of the original YouTube app which it deletes) and sending everything which normally goes to the original YouTube app to SmartTube instead. So global search works, the promotional stuff on the homepage also gets opened in SmartTube and so on.
I am using a Chromecast Ultra, but that only works if you’re ok with using google hardware and software.
I set it up so that smarttube is my default youtube player. I use the stock Netflix app and no jellyfin.
I would like to use PeerTube on it but there is no client where you can log in to your account.
Since my upgrade to 0.19 I really struggle to keep my servr online. It sounds like what is happening to me too. The whole server beco.en unesponsive after the load goes to 100. After I kicked NextCloud from the server in only kept happening every coupple of days. Let’s see if this workaround helps to fix it. If not then I’ll remove swap.
I don’t use it for dementia but just as aregular reminder for myself but it shows the same things you mention hike Date, time todays calendar but also weather andl other things which are 9000 to know. And I also use HomeAssistant for it.
Yes port forwarding with everything else works well, I have no problem with port forwarding, running a lot of services from home.
I wanted to do something similar for a long time but somehow all my atempts failed. I tried the build in into a Fritzbox but my laptop never could connect. Later I tried the wireguard addon in homeassistant but same there.
I set up Radicale with the normal deb package, I like that more because it will be automatically updated.
Did you think about just letting someone else host your apps like:
Or generic providers like https://yunohost.org/ which have one click solutions for many different software.
I bought a NUC which took 5 W idling that was quite amazing.
It was running https://zoneminder.com/ but idling it used almost the same amount. It was a old PC my dad saved from being thrown out at his company. It must have been from around 2002 or something.
I personally think a NAS would probably be the easiest option and on top of that they are optimized for low electricity consumption, which a PC, especially when it’s older is not. It makes a huge difference because it’s running 24/7 for 356 days a year.
I used a PC once and didn’t realize that it took always about 300 W so at the end of the year surprisingly the electricity bill was much higher than normally.
I have the exact opposite experience but I use their snap which has been updating itself without a single problems or me needing to change any config file for the last 4 years or something. I never need to do anything, so for me the maintenance is the best part of Nextcloud.
I hate that its web frontend is so mega slow that it takes 8 seconds just to log in.
I still use it for calendar, documents, address book and specifically notes too, but I only use external apps for that not the web frontend and the apps on the PC and mobile phone are nice and fast.
I use Syncthing for synchronizing my password manager database. And there the maintainance is also very easy, it updates itself with the system and runs in the background without me ever needing to go to the webfrontend.
I’d say if it’s only for one thing, then I’d go with Synthing, because it does not need a server. If I’d use more features especially calendar and address book and perhaps even to share documents with other people then I’d go with Nextcloud.
I also gave up on Podcasts on the desktop and only listen from the phone.
Me too, I thought that gPodden was supposed to do that, but it doesn’t even do it between two AntennaPod instances. Syncing podcasts works if you select the same name as an instance when you’re starting syncing, but syncing where you’ve been listening doesn’t.
Ah, but all my old pictures are not available anymore …
So I wanted to try it and found that Synology offers 15 GB for free so I tried it and it was extreamly easy to do. Set up a bucket and then fill in the ENV variables in docker-compose restart and it works, impressive. I might really need to think getting a good deal and doing that for my other fediverse stuff like Mastodon, Peertube and Matrix too, I think it’s equaly easy there.
Mine has always been slow. I started on a raspberry pi but later on a NUC and even on my VPS at Hetzner, it was always like you describe. Because I only used it for calendar, adressbook and sharing a few files I replaced it with Radicale for CalDav and CardDav and Syncthing for sharing files.
