It is true that a project doesn’t need to release binaries. But either those or the instructions on how to build from sources I think are somewhat expected.
Said so, I am hosting immich on docker because, specially on such fast evolving and kind of “beta” software its by far the fastest way.
No, I am forced to use containers because… There are no instructions for bare-metal installation and they also do not provide any instruction on how to build from sources (and I tried…)
Also, there are no binary releases only docker-compose.
All in all, immich cannot be deployed but with containers.
No choice: not good.
Docker (better use Podman!) Is, I am afraid, hard to avoid nowadays. I fully agree with you that bare-metal deployment should always be an option.
Its one of my biggest issues with immich/photoprism/librephotos but there is no way around that.
Immich is the only container I have on my system… A necessary evil (joking).

Thanks, but not going to host a docker container just for such a stupid thing. Silverbullet.md did cut the cheese for me and it was even simpler.
Cool! I didn’t noticed you could edit files from within it, but yes, that’s a cool option as well. Silverbullet.md turned out to be more interesting though, so i have self hosted it too.

I use a laptop and external jbod covered with a low power ups. As other said, the point is to bridge powergaps now long term working powerless. I live in the countrisied, so small powergaps happens specially when my photovoltaic don’t produce (no, i have no battery accumulators, too expensive)
Using let’s encrypt certbot is so easy and automated that I never bothered for wildcards anyway, so.
Now the big question is: are you an Arch or a Gentoo lover? Just joking.

Yeah, i kind of wrote badly. I mean NGINX configuration is simple enough and static enough not to need a dedicated service for my use case. I don’t feel the need to mess with NPM. I have a neat folder structure under nginx config so that adding one service is pretty clean and simple and editing one too.
As already stated, it’s Dokuwiki. I tried a few and this was the best compromise between features and complexity for my needs.
One of the risks associated with wildcard SSL certificates is the increased attack surface they introduce. If one subdomain becomes compromised, it opens the door for potential attackers to gain unauthorized access to all subdomains secured under the wildcard certificate. (first google link)
I think NPM is useless (in my use-case…) and can get things more messy, but I plan to check on cockpit later on indeed.
NPM isn’t bad in itself, but NGINX configuration is basically static and IMHO don’t require a dedicated GUI.
Indeed I am a quite proficient sysadmin for my home server, while not a professional one.
I didn’t consider a docker file as instructions for bare metal install, thanks for the suggestion. I am currently using podman with immich because its release cycles are too fast for me to catch up otherwise.
I am thinking to experiment with something different from immich because, while its a great tool, it’s “just” (no pun intended) a backup solution for mobile devices and I need something more than that.
