Father; husband; mechanical engineer. Posting from my self-hosted Lemmy instance here in beautiful New Jersey. I also post from my Pixelfed instance.
Yeah, but I don’t know if that really applies to XMPP. Google turned on XMPP federation for seven years and then turned it off. The article basically admits that it’s counterfactual to say that XMPP would have wider adoption or be more developed today if Google never did that.
I think a more significant concern would be if Meta hires away Fediverse developers, but that is separate from them just turning on federation.
Well, what do you really mean?
How? XMPP still works anyway.
The Fediverse is going to get a lot bigger once Meta turns on federation for Threads.
I run my own Pixelfed and Lemmy instances on not so young consumer grade hardware and it’s fine, but I am the only user. I would not want to have to deal with other users’ complaints, bad behavior, or other BS.
How does it handle stocks and other assets? Do you know iysf it’s possible to import from GnuCash into Firefly?
If there’s a way to get a Nest thermostat to my own server instead of Google’s, I’d love to hear it. I’ve had a good experience so far, but it would be nice to have a backup ready in case Google ever pulls the plug on the service.
You can absolutely run your own XMPP server. It came with my Yunohost installation.
Why not just use XMPP?
Yes, I was going to attempt it this week, but hopefully I’m in the clear. With Yunohost the http challenge for renewal is done automatically, but apparently the DNS challenge is a manual process. It wouldn’t be the end of the world, but I just like having nice things.
You may not knowingly or unknowingly exceed the bandwidth usage limitations that we may establish from time to time for the Services, or knowingly or unknowingly use the Services to host any type of server or commercial network or subnetwork.
Lol I guess not then! I would think that many customers violate this rule because many consumer products contain some type of server.
Hmmm… I do not have Pictrs because I am using the Yunohost Lemmy package, so there are no images on my instance, but I can still see images while logged into my instance.
I wonder if you instead of disabling Pictrs you could just block image uploads to your Lemmy site, or maybe use a PiHole or Adguard on your network to block them.
It just means that you can’t upload pictures, including banners or avatars. However, when I want to create an image post, I just make the post on Pixelfed and then mention the Lemmy community I want to post to at the bottom of the post body. Supposedly there’s a way to reference a remote image for a banner or an avatar, but I haven’t figured that out yet.
I’m not subscribed to that community, but I guess I’m glad Pictrs doesn’t work for me, since I am using the Yunohost version of Lemmy. The creators of the Yunohost package couldn’t get it to work. I haven’t really missed it honestly.
It’s not one of the options you listed, but it’s worth considering a laptop since it has a UPS built in.
If I were to do this would I have to change my actual XMPP port? Or, is it just a matter of adjusting my DNS records somehow? Or something else?
That seems like an oversight. ActivityPub should rely on some sort of certificate or cryptographic signature instead of a domain which might have to occasionally change.
