If you are more interested in running apps than having a NAS, I recommend trying CasaOS. TrueNAS is great, but I found CasaOS significantly more straightforward, especially when it comes to smb shares (it’s like two clicks).
Also TrueNAS uses ZFS which is good for what it is, but means you basically need a machine running TrueNAS to read/write the drives in case something goes wrong.
No problem! I really like it!
TrueNAS is very good at being a NAS. I used it for some time but eventually moved to CasaOS because it’s better at being a home server.
+1 for CasaOS! The simplest and best I’ve tried.
Lots of good suggestions here already but nobodys mentioned the Asrock A300 DeskMini. Low power consumption and you could probably find one for pretty cheap.
Obviously an old laptop you don’t use anymore is a great and affordable choice too. Comes with a built-in battery backup!
Thanks for this, this is the only breakdown I’ve been able to get (sort of) working.
Just to clarify- this won’t load thumbnails into Plex, correct?
ohhhh that’s funny thanks!
Hi me again, sorry to use you for tech support, but I’m getting this error:
error: no such option: --sponsorblock-remove,all
Awesome thanks, I think I’m going with this! The UI is good. I’m struggling to find a list of all sponsorblock args, know of anywhere?
Also do you happen to know what Plex scraper is best for YoutubeDL-Material’s default naming scheme?
I can’t seem to not get this error:
ERROR: getaddrinfo ENOTFOUND ytdl-mongo-db-
EDIT: Just had to wait the fifteen minutes like you suggested!
I’ve tried installing it via docker a hundred times and can never get it working. Maybe I’ll revisit it some day, but it also seems like more than I need and the server it’s running on isn’t super powerful.
Newpipe is great at what it does, but I’m trying not to watch YT anywhere except on TV to avoid doing it mindlessly.
This looks good thanks, not sure how I missed it! I wish there was a GUI for configuring, but other than that it looks great.
Good advice, thanks.
endurance micro SD card
Great to know about, thanks. SanDisk has 64gb for $10 on Amazon (32gb for $12 lol)
IMO, a Pi running off a MicroSD card is by far the highest failure risk you have in this configuration.
Yeaaah I know but it’s all I’ve got right now. I plan on keeping a backup image of the microSD image in case it breaks I can just swap it out.
Thanks for the advice! Do you think SyncThing would be the most straightforward way of doing it? I’m running CasaOS for most apps but have HA in a virtual machine.
TrueNAS is good but has a steepish learning curve for many people, it’s way more oriented towards being a NAS than running services, which can be confusing overkill (only using ZFS for example).
I recently discovered CasaOS which is now my go-to recommendation for people starting off. It is a good combo of “just works” with the ability to tweak for those who are interested in diving deeper.

Great guide, total newbies might want to look into something like CasaOS too just for simplicity’s sake.
Debian with CasaOS!
